Modern Stone House
Modern Stone House
Constructed from stone from the site and a nearby quarry, the Modern Stone House is design to fit into the natural landscape in a valley in Lyons, Colorado. The simple rectangular box with a single sloped roof follows the slope of the landscape and is orientated north and south with large overhangs to maximize passive solar heating. Designed to become future ruins, long walls composed of local sandstone define the south and partial north elevations. Punched openings provide windows in these otherwise solid walls – including the main entrance. Contrasting with these elevations, the east and west sides of the home are clad in metal siding and have large expanses of glass, capturing views of the valley. Perched on leaning columns inspired by a grove of aspen trees, an all-glass yoga studio provides visual contrast to the heavy stone-walls and visual relief from the stark elevation.
