As the spring 2014 quarter comes to an end, we are saying good-bye to our favorite New Vista High School student and she heads off for summer break. Lily began working at the HMH in October 2013 as part of her New Vista High School Community Experience program. As her last day draws to a close, we want to take time to reflect and thank her for the wonderful job she did with us. Unlike other “internships,” where you might find yourself getting coffee or doing never-ending data entry, we at HMH made her part of our Boulder Architect team.

  • From brainstorming new ideas, to client/architect interaction it is exciting to see a new home transition into reality…and Lily was there for all of it. She was able to observe one of our custom homes from framing to completion and attended regular job site visits as the house progressed.
  • lily-kitchenLike so many other things in life, the best way to learn is by simply doing, and then doing it again, and again. HMH provided this opportunity for Lily by throwing her to the training grounds, allowing her to connect with staff and letting her realize what works and what doesn’t while working on her own house design in 3D CAD. HMH provided critiques along the way giving her a firsthand look into the professional architecture world.

We at HMH have been incredibly grateful to Lily for everything she has achieved whilst here. We hope that through working closely with our designers and the firm principal, she gained a better understanding of the design strategies and practical responsibilities of a working architect.

Not only that, but she is positive, upbeat and has an awesome sense of style to boot! We’ve been lucky to have a student with such a cool personality. We’ll miss you, Lily!

Each Wednesday during the course of the school year, New Vista High School students volunteer in the Boulder Valley and Denver communities. They learn about their community, contribute to it, explore broad issues of concern, learn work place skills, and create positive partnerships with adults. Developing a personal “Path” is an essential part of each student’s schooling at New Vista. Community Experience serves an important role in the formation of “Path” for students. It is a structured and supported opportunity for each student to explore his or her way of interfacing with, contributing to, and, being in the world of adult work.
